The Iowa Bioprocessing Center is fortunate to have two utility providers to ensure a reliable energy supply.  Mid American Energy and Alliant Energy are regional utilities with thousands of customers spanning several states.

MidAmerican Energy

MidAmerican Energy Company, Iowa's largest energy company, is strategically located in the middle of several major markets in the Midwest. Headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, the company provides service to customers in a 10,6000 square-mile area in Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota, and Nebraska. MidAmerican Energy Company is a subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company. The company has committed to keep base electric rates stable through 2013. At the end of 2009, MidAmerican Energy had 6,443 megawatts of owned generating capacity. Approximately 52 percent was fueled by coal; 21 percent by natural gas and oil; 20 percent by wind, hydroelectic, and biomass; and 7 percent by nuclear.

Alliant Energy

Alliant Energy Corporation is a public utility holding company serving approximately 1 million electric and over 400,000 natural gas customers in the upper-Midwestern states of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Alliant Energy's Interstate Power and Light Company serves utility customers in Iowa.

Our service territory covers 54,000 square miles in the heartland of America and includes 9,700 miles of electric transmission lines and 8,000 miles of natural gas main.

We maintain a strong fleet of fossil fuel and renewable generating facilities across the upper Midwest, generating more than 31 million megawatt hours of electricity each year. The current generation mix of company owned and purchased power includes 49 percent coal, 17 percent nuclear, 3 percent wind, 2 percent natural gas, 1 percent other renewable sources, and 28 percent purchased from various fuel sources. Interstate Power and Light commissioned its first company-owned wind farm, the 200 megawatt Whispering Willow Farm in December 2009, furthering its commitment to renewable energy.
